KENYA: Phase II of Standard Gauge Railway Project to commence in July

The second phase of the Standard Gauge Railway project in Kenya is expected to kick-off this July. The 398km line will be constructed from Nairobi to Lake Victoria port, Kisumu and further to Uganda; as against the previously planned Nairobi-Malaba.

Rwanda, Sudan and Burundi are also going to be linked through the railway line. Construction work has begun for the Mombasa-Nairobi route, a project undertaken by China Communication Company. The link from Mombasa to Nairobi is 609km long.

In the same vein, at the beginning of this month Uganda enteredentered a deal with the China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC) to see to the construction of a railway line worth US$3.2bn between Kampala through Malaba to Nimule in South Sudan.
