China has announced plans to sponsor the construction of a 60,000 capacity stadium in Anyama suburb of Abidjan, Ivory Coast. This project is in readiness for the 2021 African Cup of Nations. Construction work is expected to commence in January 2016 through to 2018.
According to a sport official, the Ebimpe stadium will be a “gift” from China to the country. He further stated that the stadium will give room for the hosting of football, rugby and athletics competitions. A sport city will also be constructed in the premises.
Presently, Abidjan has one stadium: Houphouet-Boigny stadium with a capacity of 35,000. It was built just before Ivory Coast’s independence in 1960.
China is also financing an hydro-electric project in the country alongside the construction of a highway that will link Abidjan to the Ghanaian border and the construction of a container terminal at Abidjan port.
